Quality Control

ASTM A270 stainless steel sanitary tubing is produced from selected 304/316L stainless steel with full heat number traceability and mill test certificates. The complete process – from raw material inspection, forming and welding, solution annealing to final polishing – is controlled under standardized procedures to ensure stable quality. Dimensional tolerances, wall thickness and surface finish are monitored according to ASTM A270 requirements so that each length of tubing is suitable for hygienic applications.

Testing

Each batch of ASTM A270 sanitary tubing is subject to dimensional and visual inspection, as well as checks on inner surface roughness (Ra) and weld appearance. According to customer requirements, we can perform hydrostatic testing and/or eddycurrent testing to verify weld integrity and ensure the tubing is free from leakage, cracks and other critical defects. Test reports and MTCs can be provided together with the goods for quality documentation and project approval.

Surface Finish

The inner and outer surfaces are supplied with hygienic finishes such as 2B, BA, 180 grit, 240 grit, 320 grit, as well as mechanically polished (MP) or electropolished (EP) options. Internal roughness can typically be controlled to Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, with Ra ≤ 0.6 μm available for highpurity applications. Smooth surfaces reduce product residue, improve cleanability and support CIP/SIP cleaning procedures.

Annealing

ASTM A270 sanitary tubing is solution annealed after forming and welding to restore corrosion resistance and ductility. For more demanding hygienic and highpurity systems, bright annealed (BA) tubing can be supplied, offering a cleaner and smoother internal surface that further enhances cleanability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ASTM A270 sanitary tubing and standard industrial stainless steel pipe?

ASTM A270 stainless steel sanitary tubing is specially designed for hygienic process piping, while standard industrial stainless steel pipe is for general service. Compared with industrial pipe, ASTM A270 sanitary tubing features:

  • Defined inner/outer surface roughness (Ra), typicallyRa ≤ 0.8 μm or ≤ 0.6 μm, to improve cleanability and sterilization.
  • Stricter control of weld quality and internal/external defects to reduce dead legs and product holdup.
  • Tighter tolerances on OD, wall thickness and straightness for reliable sealing with sanitary fittings, clamps and unions.
  • Complete documentation such as mill test certificates (MTC), dimensional and surface roughness reports.
Therefore, ASTM A270 sanitary tubing is more suitable for hygienic and cleanservice systems, while standard industrial pipe is used for general fluid transfer.

How do I choose between 304 and 316L for ASTM A270 sanitary tubing?

The two common grades for ASTM A270 sanitary tubing are 304 and 316L:

  • 304 ASTM A270 sanitary tubing: suitable for general food, beverage and brewery lines where media are not highly corrosive and cleaning conditions are relatively mild; it offers a costeffective solution.
  • 316L ASTM A270 sanitary tubing: contains Mo, providing better resistance to chlorides and cleaning chemicals; recommended for dairy, pharmaceutical and biotech applications with stricter hygiene and corrosion requirements.
If you are unsure, you can share the medium, temperature and cleaning method (CIP/SIP), and we will suggest the appropriate grade.

What Ra values are typically available for ASTM A270 sanitary tubing and how do they affect cleaning?

ASTM A270 stainless steel sanitary tubing is usually supplied with polished internal and external surfaces and can offer 2B, BA, 180/240/320 grit, mechanically polished (MP) or electropolished (EP) finishes. Typical internal roughness levels are:

  • Ra ≤ 0.8 μm: sufficient for most food, beverage and dairy applications.
  • Ra ≤ 0.6 μm: for highend dairy, pharmaceutical and biotech processes.
The lower the Ra, the smoother the internal surface, the less product residue remains and the easier the tubing is to clean and sterilize, which is critical for highhygienesanitary piping systems.

What is the difference between welded and seamless ASTM A270 sanitary tubing, and how should I choose?

We supply both welded sanitary tubing and seamless sanitary tubing under ASTM A270:

  • Welded tubing: wider size range and lower cost, suitable for most food, beverage and dairy production lines; commonly chosen as an economical solution.
  • Seamless tubing: offers better pressure resistance, uniformity and safety margin, preferred for higher-pressure or more critical pharmaceutical and high-purity process lines.
The choice depends on operating pressure, process requirements and budget. We can recommend welded or seamless ASTM A270 sanitary tubing based on your project data.

What test reports and certificates can you provide for ASTM A270 stainless steel sanitary tubing?

For ASTM A270 stainless steel sanitary tubing, we can provide a full set of quality documents, including:

  • Mill test certificates (MTC) with chemical composition and mechanical properties.
  • Dimensional and tolerance inspection reports (OD, wall thickness, length, straightness, etc.).
